Nothin' But Postseason

The regular season is now closed, and the major conferences have a few days off before their tournaments start. That left Monday to the little guys, who crowned three more champions, all who will receive automatic NCAA bids. Only one of those teams, however, won its conference's regular season championship, so clearly the NIT is filling up with mid-majors.

A couple of at-large teams did play on Monday night out of the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga eliminated Saint Mary's from a chance at an at-large bid, and BYU ended San Francisco's remarkable season. If SMC is dropping out of the upper echelon of the West Coast Conference, USF could take its place.

The early rounds of the C-USA start and MEAC continue on Tuesday, but the bigger news is the four championship games which will give us 4 more automatic bids. Three of the four have their #1 seeds remaining, but the Horizon lost not only its top seed, Green Bay, but its second seed, Cleveland State. Whomever comes out of the Horizon will enter the NCAA tournament as a Cinderella mid-major.
