As the last game of the night started, I began writing my blog thinking that there would be no extremely notable wins tonight. Boy, I was wrong.
@Wyoming 68, San Diego State 62: San Diego State has made it as high as a #1 seed in this season's Bracket Brief, removed when teams with better resumes won marquee games. SDSU just didn't have an opportunity for those wins in the MWC, but they still looked excellent, having lost only one game all year, at home to Arizona (which would cause almost any other team to lose a game). Their impressive run through the MWC ended on Tuesday night as they were taken down by a talented but underachieving Wyoming team. It is now hard to look at the Aztecs as a team who only had a loss because it got stuck playing Arizona. Losing at Wyoming ends SDSU's chance at a #1 seed, and it may end their chance at a #2 seed, assuming how stacked the top of the bracket is.
I figure I could have put Oklahoma State's loss above, but we all knew what would happen with Smart on the bench. And Michigan over Ohio State is an interesting win within the Big Ten, but I don't project it as greatly changing either team's position. What it did was add one more good road win to Michigan's resume, so Michigan has a few extra points to its name. But, unfortunately, the game just didn't change much.
Florida 67, @Tennessee 58
@Texas 87, Oklahoma State 68 - OK State blown out in first game without Smart
@Notre Dame 68, Clemson 64 (2OT) - tough loss for CU, who needs every win, and could have won
@Wichita State 78, Southern Illinois 67
Michigan 70, @Ohio State 60 - great road win for Michigan, OSU loss is undamaging
Xavier 65, @Butler 50
Lots of good action on Wednesday with 54 games on the slate. The marquee game of the night is Syracuse at Pitt, but keep your eye on the A-10 battle between GW and VCU to try to stay off the dreaded 8/9 lines, Duke at Carolina, and a lot of West Coast bubble teams in road action (Stanford, New Mexico, and California).
